When you look the mirror, you see yourself. You see your hair and eyes and mouth. You might also see a smile and remember what made you laugh earlier that day. You might see sadness in your eyes and remember the fight you had with your friend at lunch.
When we look in the mirror, we see who we are on the outside, but we can see things like hurt or happiness in our facial expressions and the gestures we make. When you look out the window, what do you see? You see a view to the outside world. You see the leaves fall or the cars drive by or the people sitting on the stoop. You see things that might not be things in your own life, but that make you think in new ways about other people's lives.

Books are like mirrors and windows. Sometimes when I'm reading a story, I'm reminded of something that happened to me or how I felt the same way a character does. Those are the moments when it feels like I'm looking in the mirror.
Other times, I'm reading a story and the life experiences of the main character are so different from my own that it's like I'm looking out the window and seeing a whole new world. |
