CROW BOY
By Taro Yashima
Let's Meet the Author
I HOPE ALL OF YOU HAVE A BOOK THAT YOU ARE NOW HAPPY READING, AND THAT PASSES THE FIVE FINGER RULE. TODAY WE ARE GOING TO REVIEW MY EXPECTATIONS FOR READING TIME, AND WHAT YOUR JOB WILL BE EACH DAY.
Teachable Moments....
Nearly every day we will have a reading lesson. You will come to the meeting area, and I will read aloud, you will listen to books, or I will talk to you for 5-10 minutes. After that, you will head off to read independently. When you read, I will be asking you to practice something each day: something that I know will help you grow into stronger readers. At the end of independent practice time, I will call you back to my table and we will talk about our learning that day.
- To practice this, I am going to rehearse this process with you. Today for my lesson, I am going to read aloud a favorite picture book of mine, Crow Boy. So make sure you are in a good listening position and are ready for our reading.
Engage
As we listen, we will stop to turn and talk to a partner about what we are thinking about in the story.

Choosing just the right books is not just choosing books whose words you can read. Today, I asked you to do some deep thinking inside of the book I read aloud. As you go off to read in your independent books, I want you to do the same kind of deep thinking.
Listen to your thoughts. What is your book making you think about?

- Be prepared to share your thinking with the class. You may jot your thought on a post it note if you think you might forget.
