STUDENTS WILL... (DAY 14)
- CO-CONSTRUCT A COLLEGIAL, VIBRANT COMMUNITY OF READERS
- INTERNALIZE THE ROUTINES AND STRUCTURES OF INDEPENDENT READING PRACTICE
- MAKE LITERATURE CHOICES THAT REPRESENT INTERESTS AND LEVEL
- PRACTICE INCREASING STAMINA AS READERS
- SET THOUGHTFUL CLASS AND INDIVIDUALIZED READING GOALS
CONNECT THROUGH WARM-UP
NOT EVERYONE IN THIS CLASS IS READING AT THE SAME READING LEVEL, JUST AS NOT EVERYONE LIKES THE SAME BOOKS. EVERYONE IS UNIQUE, JUST LIKE CROW BOY. BUT EVERYONE WANTS TO LEARN TO BECOME POWERFUL READERS. WE ALL SHARE THE SAME GOAL.
THANK YOU MR. FALKER
By Patricia Polacco
Let's Meet the Author
TODAY I AM GOING TO READ ALOUD ANOTHER FAVORITE PICTURE BOOK. THANK YOU MR. FALKER, BY PATRICIA POLACCO. YOU MAY NOT KNOW IT, BUT THIS BOOK IS A TRUE STORY, AND THE MAIN CHARACTER IS PATRICIA. SHE HAD A VERY HARD TIME LEARNING TO READ AS A CHILD. BUT SHE CONQUERED HER CHALLENGES, AND IS NOW A FAMOUS CHILDREN'S BOOK WRITER WHO HAS WRITTEN MANY, MANY BOOKS.
Teachable Moments....
For years, Trisha couldn't read. Mr. Falker began to work with her and tried lots of strategies. But she still couldn't read. And then one day she could. What do you think changed? What made the difference for her?
Engage
Turn and share your ideas about what finally helped Trisha learn to read.
Readers have to want to learn and grow, and they have to believe in themselves. Starting tomorrow, we are going to begin talking about our own reading goals because I want each of you to grow as a reader in my classroom this year.

Today as you read, I want you to be thinking about what feels hard for you as a reader. It might be that you've never tried a particular genre, or don't want to. Or that longer books are tough. Or maybe you just want to finish a book for once. Any challenge you have is important, because if you overcome this challenge, you will become a better reader.
